A Guide to White Water Rafting in Scotland

A Guide to White Water Rafting in Scotland

Mountains + rivers + lots of rain = white water rafting heaven. Most people wouldn’t think much about white water rafting in Scotland. But this wee country has huge highland peaks, an abundance of rivers running into its lochs, and plenty rainy weather. So when you think about it, it’s actually ideal.

Awesome! But where is best?

While there are a few options, Perthshire is without a doubt the most popular area for white water rafting in Scotland. It is easily accessible from all parts of the country (even by train too) and has plenty to offer for watersports and other activities.

Great! Is there a company who can show me the ropes?

Splash Rafting are a brilliant company who I have personally had 3 separate outings with. This is not a sponsored post either – I just think the guides are knowledgeable and an absolute blast to be around.

And where will I be paddling?

If you are a bit nervous and trying it for the first time, the River Tay is an idea option. The Tay is the largest volume river in the country. Starting at the sea near Broughty Ferry, the river starts wide before narrowing near Perth, creating some awesome rapid sections. Nothing too wild though, and the Splash team will give you all the know-how to handle the water.

On the other hand, if you’re a little braver, try your hand at River Tummel. Faster currents than the Tay and with a few more gnarly sections, it is still a great beginners option with the Splash team. River Tummel was my first try at white water rafting in Scotland and it was absolutely epic. Can you spot the feet in the air in the photos below? Yeah, they’re mine. I fell out. Scary? Yeah, a bit. Totally awesome day? ABSOLUTELY.

Make a weekend of it

Perthshire is my favourite area in Scotland. It is well worth making a weekend of your rafting trip. For campers, the Blair Atholl campsite has fantastic facilities, is very family oriented and has a friendly pub nearby too. Wanting a bit more luxury? The Moness Resort is a very popular spa hotel or the cosy Schiehallion Hotel is right in the centre of Aberfeldy – so you’re right next to the Splash headquarters too!

Important notes + Further information

  • Snowmelt, rainfall and dam timings will make a massive impact on your runs. If you are with a guided company, they will be tracking this for you.
  • Other areas you can look into are River Garry (higher grade rapids based on scheduled dam flows!) and River Findhorn.
  • The VisitScotland website has plenty further information about white water rafting in Scotland.
  • If you want to catch some footage of your day, a GoPro is a must-have adventure camera for watersports!

Scotland also has plenty other paddlesports, like kayaking! Make sure you’re following me on Instagram and Facebook, or subscribe to my newsletter for plenty adventure content.
